When I learned to meditate there were no apps so it made life a lot simpler. I learned from Buddhist teachers - and still do. I spend about a month every year learning from the best.
It's much easier meditating with a timer because it brings you back if - or rather when - your mind wanders. I've tried several and the best by far is Insight Timer. I don't do guided meditations myself but there are plenty on there. I like it because it's easy to set the time and interval bells. It shows you your stats and that helps keep me on track.
There's a community too. You can connect with people locally or all around the world. And the best thing of all it's free! There are courses and meditations you can pay for or you can subscribe for a nominal amount of $5 a month.
